fancing Affinity: 有趣的是,读完小说我的第一冲动也是去找Crivelli的Veritas——这神秘人到底怎生形容,that mysteriously "stern, melancholy and handsome"?花了两小时在图书馆翻early Renaissance painting而不得,guess Crivelli was rather obscure in light of Giotto、Tintoretto、Titian, etc. Veritas projected as Selina? But which is which?

Why was I so affected by the ending? Because I used to share her secrete passion, used to fancy affinity with someone dear, whom since I don't know when has become distant and detached? Reflecting upon the messages from the novel, I almost decide to start living an intelligent, lighthearted life again. Cannot bear that consuming intensity any more. In terms of feminine emotion, I think it's just another side of spiritualism: the power of imagination dominates, if not some unseen Guardian.

fancing Affinity: Two minor points concerning the plot:
1. There's an ambiguity of Selina's supernatural capacity. She does seem to have ways to connect to the other sphere, and Peter Quick is such an obvious allusion to Peter Quint who "corrupted" the children of Bly. Yet discernable from Selina's diary is also the conspiracy with Ruth from the beginning (even before Mrs. Brinks' first visit to Selina?). The last page makes greater mystery rather than revelation, and I cannot keep from wondering Selina as Crivelli's Veritas.

2. Why Selina chose to run off with Ruth Vigers instead of "Aurora", given the chance in the end? Margaret, admittedly, is plain, but to compare her with Vigers! I wonder what topic that the delicate, educated Selina could share with the maid rather than the sensitive Ms. Prior. Or rather, she is not homosexual at all, but only availing her sexuality to gain any benefits accessible, considering the service and clothing in her pre-jail dark circles. An even darker picture. Guess you think so too, not for money or for love but for freedom. Isn't it the same idea of Fingersmith?

Affinity同志,Come on!

Mrs. I am afraid it has been terribly abused。
